“Meaningful” vs “Mundane”: The Script Flips When the Uniform Comes Off

From our co-founder and executive director, Bill Kieffer…

While in uniform we did big “meaningful” things that we struggled to make “mundane”.

Sometimes it worked; the exceptional things we did, that are inconceivable to many civilians, became part of our routine (“mundane” if you will). Sometimes, despite all the training, rehearsals, and preparation the “meaningful” would never become “mundane”.

This flips when the uniform comes off – we struggle to make the “mundane” “meaningful”.

Many things we held as “meaningful” while in uniform, are no longer a core part of our daily existence. Tasks, activities, actions, and priorities that seem “mundane” compared to our prior career begin to occupy our days. Our priorities, patience, self-confidence, values and other aspects of our being may be tested.

I’ve travelled this journey. I’ve found meaning in some pretty mundane things. It wasn’t always fun or easy, but I can say with 100% certainty it has made me a far better man with a much deeper appreciation for the richness of life’s experiences.

What are you doing to find meaning amongst the mundane?
