Service members and veterans are generally biased toward action. We have a compelling need to be ‘doing’ – ‘executing’.
This is good; a positive trait that adds value to any organization, business, or community.
That said, ‘executing’ without ‘exploring’ often wastes time and energy, and mitigates success potential.
This is especially true in career transition.
Failing to ‘explore’ before ‘executing’ makes career transitions harder, slower, and more frustrating than necessary. Motion does not always equal progress. A bit of ‘exploration’ before ‘execution’ helps you make better decisions about what actions to take.
Failing to ‘explore’ throughout your transition journey, keeping eyes and ears open for new opportunities, connections and so forth, limits your ability to see and exploit potentially great options.
Before and throughout your transition:
- ‘Explore’
- YOU – “Who you are”, “What you bring to the party”, and “How you define success”.
- The WORLD – what opportunities exist; new connections; ways to best engage with new people, organizations and communities; and more
- ‘Execute’ based on what you learn from your ‘exploration’.
