Are You Answering the Wrong Question? Be Sure You Connect Your Past to the Employer’s Future!

Networking and interviewing can be challenging.

You’re interacting with new people from different businesses, backgrounds, experiences, expectations, and more.

They have certain interests that may be different than yours.

Consider this…you are networking or interviewing with an employer, discussing an appealing job opening in their firm.  Their interest is in filling that opening. Your interest is in landing a job.  While similar, these are two very different perspectives.

The employer is not focused on helping YOU land – they are focused on finding the BEST candidate for their open job.

How do they go about doing that? By being laser-focused on THEIR needs!

It’s common for job seekers/candidates to focus on their experience; the great things they’ve done and the top notch results they’ve achieved.

The error occurs when you fail to clearly CONNECT YOUR PAST to the EMPLOYER’S FUTURE; not making it obvious how your past successes demonstrate your potential to fill their needs.

LISTEN to what employers are saying. Hear their needs. Respond to their questions with clear, concise, complete answers that connect your past to their future.

You’ll be glad  you did!

Bonus Note: Go light on the ‘mil-speak’ / ‘veteran-ese’ language – most civilian employers never served in uniform and won’t understand what you’re saying.
